Wood, woodpecker, by Clifford Ellis and Rosemary Ellis, 1933

This poster was commissioned in 1933 by the Underground Electric Railways Company Ltd. It formed one of a series to encourage travel to the countryside, using four different departments of London Transport. This image of a green woodpecker, being watched by a couple in the background, was painted by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis and is accompanied by a short poem: 'The busy Woodpecker, Made stiller by her sound, The inviolable quietness'.

Clifford Ellis attended St. Marin’s School of Art Polytechnic and London University. Much of his work was done in collaboration with his wife Rosemary Ellis. They married in 1931 and they worked together on poster designs for Shell, the Empire Marketing Board and the General Post office, as well as London Transport. Between 1945 and 1982 they designed nearly one hundred book jackets for the New Naturalist Series published by Collins.

To make a return, please follow our instructions below:

1. Send an email to [email protected] within 14 days of receiving your goods to notify us of the return.
2. Return the item(s) to the address below within 28 days of receiving the item/s. Please make sure to include your order number. Clothing items which are being returned due to incorrect sizing can be returned opened as long they are unworn, and the tags are attached.
3. The return shipment cost must be paid by you and will not be covered by the London Transport Museum, unless the item is faulty. We would recommend that you use recorded delivery.
4. Once the returned item/s has been received and processed by our warehouse, we will issue you a refund within 14 working days.
