Wimbledon tennis, by Andre Edouard Marty, 1933

This poster by Andre Eduoard Marty was published by the Electric Underground Railway Company as a panel poster to promote the Wimbledon Tennis Championship in 1933. Posters advertising major sporting events were often produced in small panel sizes for use inside Underground cars. This one promotes the bus connection to Wimbledon tennis courts, which were some distance from the nearest Underground station.

Andre Eduoard Marty designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1931 and 1933. He designed many posters in this time, many promoting sporting events as well as other significant London events.

Andre Edouard Marty was born in Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an illustrator, engraver and theatre designer. He is well known for his fashion plates produced for magazines such as 'Femina' and 'Vogue'. Marty designed posters for the Ballets Russes at the Paris Opera in 1910, the Underground Group in 1931, and London Transport in 1933. He also designed sets and costumes for the theatre, cinema and ballet in the 1930s. In later years, Marty moved to design fashion enamel vases, plates and jewellery.

To make a return, please follow our instructions below:

1. Send an email to [email protected] within 14 days of receiving your goods to notify us of the return.
2. Return the item(s) to the address below within 28 days of receiving the item/s. Please make sure to include your order number. Clothing items which are being returned due to incorrect sizing can be returned opened as long they are unworn, and the tags are attached.
3. The return shipment cost must be paid by you and will not be covered by the London Transport Museum, unless the item is faulty. We would recommend that you use recorded delivery.
4. Once the returned item/s has been received and processed by our warehouse, we will issue you a refund within 14 working days.
