The Popular Service Suits All Tastes 1913 - Poster

Commissioned by the Underground in 1913, the image is instantly recognisable as a pastiche of Willow Pattern, a popular china decoration adapted from a Chinese design in the 18th century. The features that this version shares with the original Willow Pattern are three figures crossing a bridge, a characteristic tree to the right, two doves, and a pagoda. The boat and teahouse have been replaced by a train and station building. The combination of elements tells the mythical story of a Chinese maiden and her forbidden lover who elope. Pursued and killed by her enraged father, the couple are reincarnated as doves and find eternal happiness. The text below provides a witty play on words, with a punning reference to the popularity of the 'service', referring to the china dinner service and the train service.

To make a return, please follow our instructions below:

1. Send an email to [email protected] within 14 days of receiving your goods to notify us of the return.
2. Return the item(s) to the address below within 28 days of receiving the item/s. Please make sure to include your order number. Clothing items which are being returned due to incorrect sizing can be returned opened as long they are unworn, and the tags are attached.
3. The return shipment cost must be paid by you and will not be covered by the London Transport Museum, unless the item is faulty. We would recommend that you use recorded delivery.
4. Once the returned item/s has been received and processed by our warehouse, we will issue you a refund within 14 working days.
