London's river, by John Minton, 1951

A poster designed in 1951 by John Minton, for London Transport, which is dominated by the large amount of text in the poster with just a small snapshot of the River Thames at the bottom of the poster. The poster gives an in-depth description of the River, describing the history, bridges, landmarks and traffic which make the Thames such a significant feature of the city. The copyrighter for the poster was able to elaborate as the poster comprised of one half for the image and the other half for the text. The accompanying image depicts the Thames as a working river, before the decline of the Port of London in the 1960s.

John Minton was a painter but was best known as an illustrator. He stayed in Paris after completing studying there, where French Neo-Romantic painting made a strong influence on him. After his return to Britain he became associated with the English Neo-Romantic movement. Minton became a conscientious objector in World War 2. After the War he taught at several London art colleges. He painted on a very large scale and exhibited widely in Britain.

To make a return, please follow our instructions below:

1. Send an email to [email protected] within 14 days of receiving your goods to notify us of the return.
2. Return the item(s) to the address below within 28 days of receiving the item/s. Please make sure to include your order number. Clothing items which are being returned due to incorrect sizing can be returned opened as long they are unworn, and the tags are attached.
3. The return shipment cost must be paid by you and will not be covered by the London Transport Museum, unless the item is faulty. We would recommend that you use recorded delivery.
4. Once the returned item/s has been received and processed by our warehouse, we will issue you a refund within 14 working days.
