He became a humorous illustrator, contributing cartoons to magazines as well as illustrating books, including The Worries of Wilhelm, published in 1916. His Lord Kitchener poster `Your Country Needs You' (1914) first appeared on the cover of the weekly magazine 'London Opinion' before being adapted to be used as a poster.
